Morgantown me manque!

TEXTE:

Laurette Lacombe Allen (1909)

Hossein et ma famille me manquent constamment.

Oh, and one quick thing in english. I was shopping for some warmer clothes because the Mistral is ridiculous, and while I was in one particular shop they were playing John Denver’s Country Roads, our song! I thought, what a strange coincidence! A mountaineer shopping in a small French shop, in the south of France, listening to Country Roads!

Hello all! I’m sorry for not having written for a few weeks. I had some technical difficulties with the website. Oh, and I guess some technical difficulties adjusting to life here in France. You know it is one thing to study abroad with a group of students, but I am here in France trying to make it on my own! I guess that never really occurred to me before leaving. I was just so excited about the opportunity I didn’t think to work out the “minor details,” like living in another country by myself for an entire year! It never occurred to me that I was going to have to make a real effort to get involved in different associations and clubs to keep myself busy. I mean, I knew I needed to make the effort beforehand, I guess what I’m trying to say is that I didn’t know how absolutely essential it would be.

This is week two of classes at L’Université d’Avignon, and as usual my professors are excellent. I say as usual because teachers and professors, in my what 17+ years of experience, are normally interesting and educated people from whom you take a lot away. I have four classes this semester and my professors are: Mme Paturaut, M. Vargas, Mme Mathis, and Mme Gadhoum. The classes move very fast and the professors do not slow down for stragglers. I am very happy with the difficulty and pace of the classes. I can tell I will learn so much and review so much and really put everything I have learned to good use! My French will develop beyond what I had originally hoped for. This is just wonderful.

Skype works alright, but the connection cuts in and out a lot of the time. I also use google video chat and this seems to be more dependable, but again sometimes the audio cuts in and out. Since this is my primary means of communication with my family and husband it is quite frustrating when it is not working. The few minutes I get to say hello, how are you, and I love you from a distance are very important to me!

I am going to take some more pictures and upload again. So please check them out. I would write in French, but it seems that mostly english speakers are reading about my experience! If their are any francophones that would appreciate more French, please let me know and I’ll post more in French. Let me know.

After the first two weeks I am very encouraged regarding the year I will spend here! Again, my classes are difficult and will keep me busy. Further I have signed up for two organizations: 1) the international student organization and 2) the sports/recreation organization. Tomorrow I will go and finish paying my university fees so that I can get my student i.d. and join the volleyball team! Ha! I’m excited about that! There are also excursions around the Provence region, camping trips, that I am definitely going to take advantage of while I am here.

Well I’m glad to be back online in terms of my blog. I am doing well, and optimistic that this year will pass by and much will be learned and taken away from this experience. Now, more than ever, I feel more confident about living here and adapting to the culture. It was quite shocking at first, but after almost a month and a half (already!) I am starting to feel more at ease. I recognize the winding roads, foods are becoming more familiar, the rhythm of life is starting to set in, and generally my anxiety level is sinking. Tomorrow is another long day of classes, and I need to finish the rest of my homework!

Thanks for reading. If you ever have questions please just post a question and I’ll get back to you.

Bon après-midi à tous/Good afternoon everyone

Today I walked around the city (inside the walls) and took a few pictures. Now this is just a small part of Avignon, there is so much more to see. I hope you like them. Also, while I was walking around I was conned out of 10€ by a bunch of girls pretending to be deaf and unable to speak. I felt bad and gave them 10€, but I really do think it was a con. That’s not cool. I think a lot of people are on hard times here in France, and I know it is the same back home in the U.S. This is just tough to think about.

On a more uplifting side though, the palace is beautiful! And there is so much to see here in Avignon. I hope I get to see it all throughout the year. Honestly, Avignon is so beautiful I could care less if I only see her throughout my entire stay. Although I will venture to other cities if the university offers programs for students, and I know they do.

Anyway, enjoy the pictures. They take FOREVER to upload using the WVU blog/website. But I’ll try to keep a steady stream nevertheless.

Mes amis francophone!

Cliquez au dessous pour voir les photos/Click on the links below to see the photos! I’m sorry this is a bit inconvenient, but this website is not the easiest to navigate, so this is the best I could do to link photos. Bisoux :)

La première semaine/The first week

For all of my friends and family, I will begin in English. The first week in France was, to say the least, intense. The itinerary was too much, period. I left Cleveland, Ohio and flew to Chicago, where I had a 5 hour layover. The layover was long, but I didn’t really mind. I knew everything was on-time and moving according to schedule, so it was fine. On the plane, I was extremely uncomfortable. My sister was right, I should’ve picked another seat, next time by the window so at least I can prop myself against it and sleep. Although I was surrounded by French speakers, so that was neat and made me chuckle to myself from time to time while listening to their conversations. I think I slept a bit, but not much. I actually, at one point perhaps the 6th or so hour had to stand up and just stand there my back was so uncomfortable. If you have the money, go first class for an international flight. Then you can sleep, or at least you won’t have cramping everywhere. Once I got into Charles de Gaule it was very quick and easy to get through customs and get my bags. No problems here. I then found the taxi line and waited my turn. The taxi ride was expensive, but took me straight to La Gare de Lyon (the trainstation that services Avignon—the south of France). Once there I felt completely on my own. There weren’t a ton of people, at least that I could make out, to assist you. Also, I was loaded down with two huge duffle bags and two carry-ons. I’m wheeling it all around this huge station looking for my train, trying to figure out what the hell was going on! I kept watching the big screen waiting to see my train. It wasn’t there so I sat down on my bags and waited. I noticed that every couple of minutes a HUGE crowd of people would start running to a particular platform and then all would be quiet. I was sitting there, wondering how I found myself in this predicament, when all the sudden my train was on the VERY TOP of the board! How did that happen???? Two minutes ago it didn’t even exist and then it was at almost the TOP! I looked at my platform and it was pretty far away and I only had like 8 minutes to get there with ALL of my luggage. SO I RAN! Like everyone around me, I was now in the crowd running to the train. And there were all kinds of dogs and cats, I kept having to apologize for knocking someone’s dog or cat around with my bags! It was hilarious, if you’re not a worry-wart person like me! I was sweating and nervous and scared I was going to miss the train! But I asked some questions as I got near, found my car, and got it. Once I was in I, with some help, got my huge bags on the tiny racks and sat down in my seat. The TGV isn’t as shiny and chic as you see on the internet or in commercials, but all the same it is AWESOME. I had a second class ticket, and I had A TON of space. Compared to the plane, I was living the good life once I got on that train! And, yeah, its fast, really fast. My rail travel experience was honestly four stars, and again, I was not in first class. Once I sat down, I dropped my tray table and passed out for awhile. I was exhausted. The chic south of France lady next to me was probably like, who is this hobo?! When the train stopped, I had to ask if we were actually there, because I think it took less than three hours, it was so fast! I was in fact in Avignon. At that point, I didn’t really have a game plan. So I looked around, and followed the crowd. I asked a couple of young French people working there if there were taxis and there were. I waited, probably a half hour for a taxi because there were quite a few other touristes waiting. The driver got me right to my apartement complex, and I came in, took a shower and passed out. The rest is history.

I’ve started to settle in here in Avignon, and believe me this is a BEAUTIFUL and HISTORIC city. The whole city is surrounded by a HUGE stone wall. It’s as if we’re inside a palace of sorts. And guess what? We are! This is the former palace where the Popes resided, I believe dating as far back as the 17th century! I will upload some pictures as I get more settled in. Trust me, Avignon is breathtaking. The weather is beautiful, and there is often a really nice breeze that will cool you off a bit. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s hot!

Before we begin...A Word About the McBride

So you’ve heard all about this huge scholarship that is funding this year-long study adventure! If you would like to apply for this scholarship yourself, here is some helpful information. Note that the information, scholarship amounts, and/or application requirements might change from year-to-year, and so this is simply the information that I encountered when I applied in the Fall of 2009. Also, I could have left out some information as I am typing off the top of my head. (Try translating this last sentence into French!)

<ins>Who is eligible</ins> :
You must meet both of these requirements:
1. American WVU Master’s students; and
2. French majors (at the Master’s level-I know you got it above, but as Dr. Amores would say in her awesome accent “they need repetition!”).
<ins>How to apply</ins> :
1. When Dr. Tuninetti makes an open call late in the Fall semester, read the letter carefully and put together your application. The deadline was soon after we returned from the xmas break, early January I believe.
<ins>Application Requirements</ins> :
1. Design an academic program of study through a French University;
a.) the duration can be for 2 semesters = $25,000 scholarship; or
b.) the duration can be for 3 semesters (1 year) = $30,000 scholarship.
2. Statement of Intent;
3. Detailed Budget;
4. Outline/paragraph describing the University where you will study and the program you will pursue; and
5. Transcripts from all universities you have attended.

!BONNE CHANCE A TOUS!

A Brief Foreword en anglais

This blog is going to cover my daily life and experiences while I study and live in Avignon , France . My stay in Avignon and at the University of Avignon was made possible because of the Magarite Eynard McBride Scholarship that I received through the Department of Foreign Languages at West Virginia University . I have been studying French for over 6 years at the college level, and this will be my first trip to France! You can’t imagine how excited and thankful I am! As I am in Avignon to study French, this blog will be in French much of the time. However, I have already received (Renee Hilton) a comment to remember my friends and family that don’t speaka ze Fweeench! So I certainly will post things en anglais. Please feel free to respond or post in English or whatever languages I could possibly decipher using wordreference. Also, don’t fret on this note if your French could use some serious work because there will be a ton of pics uploaded to keep you in the know too.
